Garage Door Insulation FAQs
ThermaDoor Garage Door Insulation FAQs - Learn About the Original Purpose Built Product in Australia
1.Purchase & Installation Basics
How long does installing garage door insulation take?
For a standard 4.8 m × 2.4 m sectional door (16 panels), installation typically takes 2–3 hours with basic hand tools. A competent DIYer can finish it in an afternoon; our professional installers often complete the job even faster.
Do I need special tools or trade skills?
No. You only need a Stanley knife, a straight-edge, and a cordless drill. Your kit includes pre-cut foam packers plus detailed video tutorials, so you don’t need prior carpentry experience.
Will the added insulation overload my garage door or motor?
Not with our Premium kit. It adds about 5–8 kg to a double door — well within the capacity of modern door openers. However, after installation, the garage springs should be re-balanced. Our installers handle this; for DIY installs, we recommend hiring a technician to do spring adjustment for safety.
Can I add ThermaDoor to an existing door?
Yes. Our panels are engineered to slot into the recesses of many common sectional and tilt doors. You don’t need to replace the door itself — you’re simply upgrading its thermal performance.
2. Technical Standards, Compliance & Testing
Is ThermaDoor Premium independently tested?
Yes. Our R-values (R1.48 for winter, R1.43 for summer) have been verified by an independent thermal engineer, under AS/NZS 4859.1 & 2:2018, using methods specifically intended for garage doors.
Does ThermaDoor comply with AS 3999 installation standards?
While AS 3999 addresses insulation installation in homes (not specifically garage doors), our installation methods align with its principles: we mechanically fix panels (never glue), preserve an air gap, and adjust springs professionally to maintain safety.
Can garage door insulation help me hit the NCC 2022 7-Star NatHERS target?
Yes. Because our R-values are calculated for the full garage door assembly, energy assessors can input them into NatHERS software, helping to meet a 7-star rating target, often for under $1,000 per double door.
Why is an internal air cavity important?
The air cavity blocks direct steel-to-steel conduction, minimizing heat transfer and condensation. Insulation glued or pressed directly to the door skin won’t offer this performance advantage.
3. Thermal Performance & R-Values
What R-value does ThermaDoor provide?
Our Premium panels consistently deliver R1.48 in winter and R1.43 in summer, the highest independently verified values currently available for Australian garage doors.
How many degrees cooler (or warmer) will my garage be?
Results depend on orientation, insulation in adjoining walls, ventilation, etc. However, many homeowners report up to 20 °C lower internal temperature once ThermaDoor Premium has been installed.
Colder areas such as certain parts of Victoria will experience similar gains against the cold, depending on orientation and other factors.
Will insulation improve comfort in rooms adjacent to the garage?
Yes. The garage door often acts as a large weak point in the thermal envelope. Insulating it reduces heat bleed into or from adjacent living spaces, making those rooms more comfortable and energy efficient.
Does insulation reduce noise?
Yes. The 35 mm EPS core plus vinyl lamination help damp vibrations and minimise sound transmission, making the door operate more quietly and reducing noise ingress/egress.
4. DIY vs Professional Installation
Can I really install it myself?
Absolutely. Measure your door, order the correct kit, cut panels to length, insert foam packers, and slot the panels in. We provide full video instructions. For safety, you may call a pro to adjust the springs afterward.
What is included in a DIY kit?
Everything you need except basic hand tools — pre-laminated panels, foam packers, and access to step-by-step video guides. You won’t need paint, sealants, or adhesives.
When should I choose professional installation instead?
Use pro installation if you’re short on time, unsure about precision cutting or spring handling, or just prefer to have a qualified expert do the job.
5.Door Compatibility & Sizing
Will ThermaDoor fit my brand of sectional door?
In nearly all cases—yes. We offer 11 kit sizes to match major Australian sectional and tilt door brands, covering virtually all residential models.
Can I insulate a tilt door?
Yes. Our Premium panels are purpose-designed to suit both sectional and counterbalanced tilt doors.
What about roller doors?
Insulating roller doors is more complex due to the need for an air gap behind the insulation. We are currently researching viable designs. At present, our solutions are limited to sectional and tilt doors.
How do I measure my door correctly?
For DIY, measure each individual panel in the back of your garage door. We have a 60 second how to measure video to support you. For supply & installation orders, simply send a clear photo and those measurements – we’ll take care of the rest for you.
6. Maintenance, Cleaning & Durability
How do I clean ThermaDoor Premium panels?
Use a damp microfiber cloth and mild detergent. No painting or sealing is ever required.
Are the panels durable against pets or impact?
Yes. The vinyl-laminated face resists scuffs, scratches, claws, and even the occasional cricket ball, while maintaining a bright white finish.
Can moisture or UV damage the insulation?
No. The EPS core is closed-cell (won’t absorb water), and the foil/vinyl façades resist moisture, mould, and UV yellowing — even in harsh Australian climates.
What if a panel gets damaged?
Panels are not glued in — they are removable. You can replace a single panel without changing the entire kit. Replacement parts are readily available.
7. Shipping, Delivery & Returns
Do you ship Australia wide?
Yes. We deliver kits to locations across Australia via insured courier.
How long does delivery take?
Typically, metro east-coast deliveries arrive in 3–5 business days. Regional, WA, or NT deliveries can take 7–10 business days. Summer peak periods may see extended lead times, so order early.
What if my order arrives damaged?
If items are damaged in transit, email photos within 7 days of receipt. We’ll handle the freight claim and dispatch replacement panels at no extra cost (under our warranty policy).
8. Warranty & Product Support
What warranty is included?
EPS core: Covers the lifetime of the original garage door
Vinyl & foil laminates: 7-year warranty against delamination or peeling
All consumer rights under Australian Consumer Law also apply.
Is the warranty transferable if I sell my home?
No. The warranty is tied to the original purchaser and the installation address.
