Australia's Only Purpose-Built, Independently Tested Garage Door Insulation

For most Australian homes, the garage door is the largest uninsulated opening in the building. In summer it radiates heat directly into the house. In winter it bleeds warmth out.

ThermaDoor fixes that.

Engineered specifically for the daily movement and weight tolerances of a sectional or tilt garage door, ThermaDoor is the Australia’s original purpose-built garage door insulation system in Australia — independently tested to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 and verified to deliver R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer) for the complete installed assembly, not just the raw material.

What ThermaDoor Does For Your Home

Temperature Control

A standard steel garage door has an R-value of approximately R0.0 — it provides no thermal resistance at all. In summer, this turns your garage into an oven that radiates heat directly into your home. ThermaDoor  significantly reduces heat transfer in both summer and winter directions

Lower Energy Bills

When your garage is better insulated, your home’s heating and cooling system doesn’t have to work as hard to compensate for the heat or cold coming through the garage wall. The result is a measurable reduction in energy use — with R-values you can actually verify.

Noise Reduction

The 35mm high-density EPS core absorbs sound as well as heat. If your garage faces a busy road, or if your garage is directly connected to your living area, the difference in noise levels after installation is noticeable.

Protection for Your Belongings

Extreme temperature swings damage stored items — tools, sports equipment, paint, electronics, and vehicles all suffer in an uninsulated garage. Stable temperatures protect what you store.

A More Usable Space

An insulated garage is a comfortable garage. Homeowners across Australia are converting their insulated garages into home gyms, offices, workshops, studios, and playrooms — spaces that are genuinely usable year-round.

Protects Your Door and Motor

ThermaDoor adds just 7-8kg to a standard double door — a weight your door mechanism handles easily with a simple spring adjustment. The result is a door that operates within its designed parameters, extending the life of your motor and springs.

What Makes ThermaDoor Different

Three components. One engineered system.

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

Durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the panel from Australia's harsh climate. It resists fading, cracking, and weathering — delivering a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Bonded to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat, acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier, and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification. It's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes — completing the three-layer system.

Why Lamination Changes Everything

Those three layers work because of how they’re put together. Most garage door insulation products are simply loose materials inserted into a door, they shift, separate, and fail over time.

ThermaDoor is different.

Every panel is engineered specifically for garage doors, and every panel is laminated using a similar process applied to luxury caravan and marine interior manufacturing.

Lamination fuses the EPS core, UV-stable vinyl facing, and construction grade sisalation foil into a single, cohesive panel. There is no glue to fail, no layers to separate, and no air bubbles to compromise performance. The result is a purpose-built system that performs as one, not three repurposed materials trying to work together.

Verified R-Values You Can Trust

Thermal Bridging Through Steel Garage Door Hardware — FLIR Thermal Image

Surface temperature readings: 37.6°C at the steel hinge (thermal bridge) / 32.6°C at the ThermaDoor panel

What you are seeing: The blue areas show ThermaDoor panels doing their job — blocking radiant heat. The red and orange areas are the steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. It is why material R-values alone do not tell the full story — and why ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated on the complete installed door assembly, steel and all.

Calculated on the Complete Installed Door – Not Just the Insulation Material

You have probably noticed that on your garage door, the metal frame, hinges, and joins get burning hot in summer. That heat travels through the steel and straight into your garage — this is called thermal bridging. It is why the R-value of the insulation panel alone does not tell you how well your garage door actually performs.

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values for building compliance must be calculated as system (assembly) values — not just the material value. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation kit in Australia with independently calculated, dual-season door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

ThermaDoor provides honest R-values — independently verified, calculated on the complete installed door, and published for anyone to review.

These values are calculated by a qualified thermal engineer to AS/NZS 4859.1 and AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. Standard uninsulated steel garage doors perform at approximately R0.0, providing virtually no thermal resistance.

When evaluating any garage door insulation product, always ask for the independent engineering report. If a supplier cannot provide one, the R-value they are quoting is not verified.

The difference between a material R-value and a tested door assembly R-value is the difference between a product that looks good on paper and one that actually keeps your garage cooler. ThermaDoor’s R1.43 is tested on a complete installed door — steel, hinges, and all.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

The Original. The Only Independently Verified. The Only Dual-Season R-Value.

ThermaDoor has been on the Australian market since 2012 — and in that time, no other brand has matched what we offer:

Building a New Home or Renovating?

Now is the ideal time to include high-performance garage door insulation in your plans.

ThermaDoor carries independently verified dual-season R-values: R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer), calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. These are total assembly R-values — the verified figures your energy assessor inputs directly into NatHERS modelling software to help meet the 7-star energy rating requirement under NCC – especially when

Independent modelling on a standard Brisbane home showed ThermaDoor improved the NatHERS rating from 6.8 to 7.2 stars. When margins are tight and every design decision counts, a single low-cost upgrade that delivers a measurable star rating improvement is worth specifying early. Talk to your architect or builder about including ThermaDoor from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ThermaDoor the same as wall or ceiling insulation?

No. ThermaDoor is engineered specifically for garage doors — not repurposed wall batts, PIR foam, or foil wraps. Most products sold as garage door insulation are generic building materials adapted to a use they were never designed for. ThermaDoor is purpose-built for the daily movement, weight tolerances, and thermal demands of a sectional or tilt garage door system.

ThermaDoor delivers independently calculated R-values of R1.43 (winter) and R1.39 (summer) for the complete installed door assembly — not just the raw material. These values are calculated by a qualified thermal engineer to AS/NZS 4859.1 & 2:2018, the same standard used for NCC and NatHERS compliance.

No. Each panel is factory heat-laminated under pressure — the EPS core, vinyl facing, and Sisalation foil backing are fused into a single rigid unit. There is no glue to fail, no layers to shift, and no assembly required at home. The panels move with the door as one piece for the life of the door.

No. A full 16-panel kit adds approximately 7kg to the door — well within the tolerance of any standard garage door motor and spring system. The panels are specifically engineered to be lightweight, avoiding additional strain on springs, hinges, or motors.

Yes. DIY installation on a standard 16-panel sectional door takes approximately 2–3 hours with basic hand tools. No drilling, no glue, no trade skills required. Full step-by-step video guides are included with every kit.

Yes. ThermaDoor panels are available in sizes compatible with both sectional and tilt garage doors. Contact us to confirm the correct kit for your door type and dimensions.

Yes. The 35mm high-density EPS core significantly dampens acoustic transfer through the door, reducing street noise, wind noise, and the vibration of the metal door panels — particularly beneficial if you use your garage as a home gym, office, or studio.
