Home / Garage Door Insulation Sunshine Coast – DIY & Pro Install

Garage Door Insulation Built for the Sunshine Coast Climate.

On the Sunshine Coast, humid afternoons and salty sea breezes can turn your garage into a sauna. Cool Hinterland nights and sudden southerly changes mean temperatures can swing dramatically after dark. From Caloundra to Noosa and into the Hinterland, these shifts affect more than just the garage. They impact the comfort of nearby rooms, drive up your energy bills, and cut off a valuable part of your home year-round.

ThermaDoor garage door insulation is purpose-built for the Sunshine Coast climate. Our premium EPS panels are engineered specifically for sectional and tilt doors to block up to 90% of radiant heat, reduce street noise, and instantly upgrade your garage with a durable, wipe-clean vinyl finish.

Proudly Australian owned and manufactured, we offer two simple ways to get ThermaDoor on the Sunshine Coast: order a DIY kit delivered directly to your door, or book a professional installation with our certified local technicians.

Locally Based. Australian Made.

What's Your Sunshine Coast Garage Doing to Your Home?

Summer Heat & Humidity

From October through April, an uninsulated Sunshine Coast garage can hit 50°C+ by midday. That heat doesn't stay in the garage — it pushes through shared walls into adjoining rooms and forces your air conditioning to work overtime.

Storm Season & Moisture

Sunshine Coast storm season brings heavy rain, wind-driven moisture, and rapid temperature swings. Open-cell foam and fibreglass insulation absorb that moisture and fail. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and built for Queensland weather.

Cool Winter Mornings

Even in the subtropics, Hinterland nights and winter mornings can bite. An uninsulated door lets cold air settle through the floor into living areas. ThermaDoor slows heat loss overnight so stepping into your garage in the morning isn't a shock to the system.

A Real Home. A Real Result.

When your garage is more than just a place to park the car, garage door insulation is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

For Deborah’s son, an NDIS participant, the garage is “The Cave” — a vital space for his independence and his support team. They had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering to create something special. But the heat made it almost unusable.

The FLIR images below were taken on a completely ordinary autumn afternoon — outside temperature just 28°C. The uninsulated steel door was already radiating 44.7°C into the space. That is not a heatwave. That is a standard garage door making a mild day unbearable.

The temperature in the space has dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home.”

Verified R-Values You Can Trust

Thermal Bridging Through Steel Garage Door Hardware — FLIR Thermal Image

Surface temperature readings: 37.6°C at the steel hinge (thermal bridge) / 32.6°C at the ThermaDoor panel

What you are seeing: The blue areas show ThermaDoor panels doing their job — blocking radiant heat. The red and orange areas are the steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. It is why material R-values alone do not tell the full story — and why ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated on the complete installed door assembly, steel and all.

Calculated on the Complete Installed Door – Not Just the Insulation Material

You have probably noticed that even with insulation on your garage door, the metal frame, hinges, and joins still get burning hot in summer. That heat travels through the steel and straight into your garage — this is called thermal bridging. It is why the R-value of the insulation panel alone does not tell you how well your garage door actually performs.

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values for building compliance must be calculated as system (assembly) values — not just the material value. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation kit in Australia with independently calculated, dual-season door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

ThermaDoor provides honest R-values — independently verified, calculated on the complete installed door, and published for anyone to review.

These values are calculated by a qualified thermal engineer to AS/NZS 4859.1 and AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. Standard uninsulated steel garage doors perform at approximately R0.0, providing virtually no thermal resistance.

When evaluating any garage door insulation product, always ask for the independent engineering report. If a supplier cannot provide one, the R-value they are quoting is not verified.

On the Sunshine Coast, the difference between a material R-value and a tested door assembly R-value is the difference between a product that looks good on paper and one that actually keeps your garage cooler. ThermaDoor’s R1.43 is tested on a complete installed door — steel, hinges, and all.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

The Original. Still the Only.

ThermaDoor has been on the Australian market since 2012 — and in that time, no other brand has matched what we offer. It is the original and still the only purpose-made garage door insulation on the Australian market. Proudly designed, owned and manufactured in Australia by an Aussie builder, and engineered specifically for sectional and tilt garage doors — not repurposed from wall or ceiling products.

Three Layers. Engineered as One

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

Durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the panel from Australia's harsh climate. It resists fading, cracking, and weathering — delivering a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Bonded to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat, acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier, and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification. It's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes — completing the three-layer system.

Struggling to Hit 7 Stars? Your Garage Door Might Be the Answer

How Garage Door Insulation Helps Sunshine Coast New Builds Meet NCC 2022

If you are building a new home in Queensland, you already know about the 7-star NatHERS energy efficiency requirements under NCC 2022. Hitting that target can be difficult and expensive -- upgraded glazing, extra roof insulation, costly design changes.

Many homeowners and their builders overlook the largest moving part of the house: the garage door.

Independent energy modelling on a standard slab-on-ground home on the Sunshine Coast (Climate Zone 10) showed that insulating an unconditioned garage with ThermaDoor garage door insulation improved the home's NatHERS rating from 6.8 stars to a compliant 7.2 stars. That is a +0.4 star improvement from a single, low-cost upgrade. If your garage is air-conditioned, the improvement jumps to +1.4 stars.

To count in your NatHERS assessment, your energy assessor needs a verified assembly R-value -- not a material R-value or an unverified claim. ThermaDoor provides an independently verified R1.43 winter assembly R-value, calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 by a registered professional engineer. That is the exact number your assessor inputs into their NatHERS software.

Your next steps are simple:

1. Tell your builder you want ThermaDoor specified in your new build.

2. Send your energy assessor the link below -- it has the verified R-value report and full NatHERS compliance data they need.
