The ThermaDoor Story: Australia's Garage Door Insulation Pioneer
The story of ThermaDoor garage door insulation began in 2011, when licensed builder Peter Hinton recognised a common problem – Australian garages were hot in summer, freezing in winter, and often unusable. Homeowners kept asking, “I’ve insulated my house—how do I insulate my garage”? This simple but powerful question inspired Peter to develop a smarter, more effective solution.
Driven by a passion for energy efficiency and practical design, Peter set out to create the first purpose made garage door insulation in Australia. Through extensive research, hands on testing, and years of building experience, he developed a lightweight, yet high performance panel designed specifically for sectional and tilt garage doors.
After trialling various materials and prototypes, Peter perfected the design – construction grade, flame retardant EPS core with a laminated reflective foil backing to reduce radiant heat, and a laminated tough vinyl face that resists impact and is easy to clean. These garage door insulation panels not only performed exceptionally well but were simple to retrofit with no need to replace the garage door.
ThermaDoor officially launched in 2012 and quickly gained attention across Australia, as people learned it was worth adding insulation to a garage door. As a garage door insulation kit designed for Australian conditions, it filled a critical gap in the market. Builders, homeowners, and energy assessors began to see how ThermaDoor Premium could improve home comfort, reduce heating and cooling costs, and support compliance with National Construction Code energy efficiency targets.
