Home / Garage Door Insulation Brisbane

Purpose-Built. Independently Tested. Since 2012.

In Brisbane, the afternoon sun hits hard. A western or northern facing garage can easily reach 50°C by mid-afternoon in summer. Combine that with the humidity rolling in off Moreton Bay, and an uninsulated garage becomes completely unusable for months of the year.

From Burpengary and North Lakes down to Springwood and Logan, and across to Bayside and Chermside, these extreme temperatures do not just stay in the garage. They push heat into adjoining rooms, drive up your cooling bills, and cut off a valuable part of your home

ThermaDoor garage door insulation is purpose-built for the Queensland climate. Our premium EPS panels are engineered specifically for sectional and tilt doors to block up to 90% of radiant heat, reduce street noise, and instantly upgrade your garage with a durable, wipe-clean vinyl finish.

Proudly Australian owned and manufactured, we offer two simple ways to get ThermaDoor in Brisbane: order a DIY kit delivered directly to your door or book a professional installation with our certified local technicians.

Locally Based. Australian Made.

ThermaDoor is headquartered on the Sunshine Coast, with our factory at Chevallum. When you buy ThermaDoor, you’re buying Australian made insulation from a local business that knows the Queensland climate firsthand.

Built for Brisbane's Climate

Tropical Heat & Humidity

Brisbane summers regularly push garage temperatures above 40°C, with high humidity that turns an uninsulated garage into a sauna. ThermaDoor's EPS core and reflective foil backing work together to block radiant heat and keep the comfort in — whether your garage faces north or west.

Storm Season Protection

Brisbane's storm season brings heavy rain, hail, and wind-driven moisture. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and impact resistant — unlike open-cell foam, polyester batts, or fibreglass insulation that absorb moisture and fail in wet conditions. Built for Queensland weather.

Cool Winter Mornings

Even in Brisbane's mild winters, early mornings can catch you off guard. ThermaDoor slows heat loss overnight, so stepping into your garage in the morning isn't a shock to the system.

A Real Home. A Real Result.

Mountain Creek is just up the road on the Sunshine Coast — the same Queensland climate, the same afternoon sun, the same uninsulated steel door problem that Brisbane homeowners know well.

For Deborah’s son, an NDIS participant, the garage is “The Cave” — a vital space for his independence and his support team. They had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering to create something special. But the heat made it almost unusable.

The FLIR images below were taken on a completely ordinary autumn afternoon — outside temperature just 28°C. The uninsulated steel door was already radiating 44.7°C into the space. That is not a heatwave. That is a standard garage door making a mild day unbearable.

“The temperature in the space has dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home.”

Verified R-Values You Can Trust

Thermal Bridging Through Steel Garage Door Hardware — FLIR Thermal Image

Surface temperature readings: 37.6°C at the steel hinge (thermal bridge) / 32.6°C at the ThermaDoor panel

What you are seeing: The blue areas show ThermaDoor panels doing their job — blocking radiant heat. The red and orange areas are the steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. It is why material R-values alone do not tell the full story — and why ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated on the complete installed door assembly, steel and all.

Calculated on the Complete Installed Door – Not Just the Insulation Material

You have probably noticed that even with insulation on your garage door, the metal frame, hinges, and joins still get burning hot in summer. That heat travels through the steel and straight into your garage — this is called thermal bridging. It is why the R-value of the insulation panel alone does not tell you how well your garage door actually performs.

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values for building compliance must be calculated as system (assembly) values — not just the material value. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation kit in Australia with independently calculated, dual-season door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

ThermaDoor provides honest R-values — independently verified, calculated on the complete installed door, and published for anyone to review.

These values are calculated by a qualified thermal engineer to AS/NZS 4859.1 and AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. Standard uninsulated steel garage doors perform at approximately R0.0, providing virtually no thermal resistance.

When evaluating any garage door insulation product, always ask for the independent engineering report. If a supplier cannot provide one, the R-value they are quoting is not verified.

In Brisbane, the difference between a material R-value and a tested door assembly R-value is the difference between a product that looks good on paper and one that actually keeps your garage cooler. ThermaDoor’s R1.43 is tested on a complete installed door — steel, hinges, and all.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

Before and after surface temperature readings of a garage door with and without ThermaDoor insulation
Before: 61°C surface temp. After ThermaDoor: 31°C. Disclaimer: Temperatures may vary depending on orientation and location of garage.

Three Layers. Engineered as One

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

Durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the panel from Australia's harsh climate. It resists fading, cracking, and weathering — delivering a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Bonded to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat, acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier, and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification. It's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes — completing the three-layer system.

Struggling to Hit 7 Stars? Your Garage Door Might Be the Answer

How Garage Door Insulation Helps Brisbane New Builds Meet NCC 2022

If you are building a new home in Queensland, you already know about the 7-star NatHERS energy efficiency requirements under NCC 2022. Hitting that target can be difficult and expensive -- upgraded glazing, extra roof insulation, costly design changes.

Many homeowners and their builders overlook the largest moving part of the house: the garage door.

Independent energy modelling on a standard slab-on-ground home in Brisbane (Climate Zone 10) showed that insulating an unconditioned garage with ThermaDoor garage door insulation improved the home's NatHERS rating from 6.8 stars to a compliant 7.2 stars. That is a +0.4 star improvement from a single, low-cost upgrade. If your garage is air-conditioned, the improvement jumps to +1.4 stars.

To count in your NatHERS assessment, your energy assessor needs a verified assembly R-value -- not a material R-value or an unverified claim. ThermaDoor provides an independently verified R1.43 winter assembly R-value, calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 by a registered professional engineer. That is the exact number your assessor inputs into their NatHERS software.

Your next steps are simple:

1. Tell your builder you want ThermaDoor specified in your new build.

2. Send your energy assessor the link below -- it has the verified R-value report and full NatHERS compliance data they need.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Still Shopping Around for Garage Door Insulation? Start Here.

Before you buy, do one simple thing: check whether the supplier quotes the same R-value on every page of their own website.

Australian Standards are clear. Material R-values tell you how a foam board performs on a bench. They tell you nothing about how it performs inside a moving, unsealed metal garage door. Read why rigid boards are not purpose-built for garage doors.

The only R-value that counts is the installed assembly value. Some suppliers in this market quote R1.75 material and R2.0 installed on one page, then R1.5 material and “up to R1.75 installed” on another. These are not rounding differences. They are completely different claims about the same product, on the same website, with no independent testing to support either version.

Every consumer has the right to make an informed decision based on accurate product information. If a supplier cannot produce an independent engineering report for the complete installed door assembly tested to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018, their installed R-value is not a measurement. It is a guess.

This checklist gives you the five questions to ask before you spend a dollar.

  • Door-specific R-value checks (AS/NZS 4859.1 and 4859.2)
  • Mechanical fixing vs glue — why it matters
  • Door weight and spring safety (AS/NZS 4505)
  • Air gap and cavity design prompts
  • NCC 2022 / NatHERS documentation prompts

Frequently Asked Questions - Garage Door Insulation Brisbane

Does garage door insulation really make a difference in Brisbane’s climate?

Yes. Brisbane’s subtropical summers and humid conditions can make garages extremely hot. ThermaDoor garage door insulation can reduce internal garage temperatures by up to 20°C depending on orientation, while also softening winter morning chills.

ThermaDoor has independently verified R-values of R1.43 (winter) and R1.39 (summer), calculated specifically for garage doors under AS/NZS 4859.1 & 4859.2:2018. This ensures real performance, not just wall or ceiling values or ‘standalone’ numbers.

ThermaDoor offers both. Our DIY kits are easy to handle for Brisbane homeowners, while our professional installers ensure alignment with Australian Standards for insulation installation and rebalance garage door springs for long-term safe operation.

ThermaDoor is designed with Brisbane’s subtropical climate in mind. The high-density EPS core and durable vinyl laminate are non-porous, so the panels themselves will not absorb moisture. More importantly, ThermaDoor’s built-in air gap design allows air to circulate behind the panels, which helps keep the door surface dry and significantly reduces the risk of mould or mildew build-up. This is a key advantage over glued-on insulation panels, which trap moisture against the door surface and can create exactly the conditions you are trying to avoid.

While the NCC 2022 addresses insulation performance broadly rather than specifying garage doors as a separate category, ThermaDoor’s independently verified R-values align with the thermal performance standards set out in the code. Our engineering reports, which are specific to the garage door application, give builders, designers, and energy assessors the documentation they need to account for garage door insulation in their NatHERS assessments and compliance calculations. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation company in Australia able to provide these reports, making it the only product that can be formally referenced in a building compliance context.

Yes, and the results can be more significant than most people expect. Some ThermaDoor customers have reported a drop of up to 7 degrees in the temperature inside their home after installing ThermaDoor on their garage door. An uninsulated garage door is one of the largest thermal holes in a modern home, and once you close that gap, your air conditioning system no longer has to fight against a superheated space right next to your living areas. The result is lower energy consumption, reduced power bills, and a noticeably more comfortable home, particularly during Brisbane’s long, hot summers.
