For Garage Door Systems

Building to 7 stars? ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation with the engineering documentation your energy assessor needs.

Sydney summers push garage surface temperatures past 60°C. In winter, outer suburbs, the Blue Mountains, and the Southern Highlands drop below freezing — and an uninsulated metal garage door offers zero resistance to either extreme, turning your garage into an oven in summer and an icebox in winter. ThermaDoor provides purpose-built, Australian-made garage door insulation designed to block radiant heat and stop winter heat loss. Whether you need a DIY kit delivered to your door anywhere in Sydney, or professional installation through our network of local distributors, ThermaDoor delivers tested, proven results for Sydney homes. Select your region below to get started.

The Original. Still the Only.

ThermaDoor has been on the Australian market since 2012 — and in that time, no other brand has matched what we offer:

Before and after surface temperature readings of a garage door with and without ThermaDoor insulation
Before: 61°C surface temp. After ThermaDoor: 31°C. Disclaimer: Temperatures may vary depending on orientation and location of garage.

Three Layers. Engineered as One

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

Durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the panel from Australia's harsh climate. It resists fading, cracking, and weathering — delivering a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Bonded to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat, acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier, and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification. It's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes — completing the three-layer system.

Garage Door Insulation for Sydney Homes

Sydney’s climate is deceptively demanding. Summer surface temperatures on a north or west-facing metal garage door regularly exceed 60°C, driving radiant heat directly into your home. Winter mornings in the outer suburbs, Blue Mountains, and Southern Highlands can drop below freezing — and an uninsulated steel garage door offers virtually no resistance to either extreme.

ThermaDoor is purpose-built for Australian conditions — independently tested to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 with declared assembly R-values of R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer). It is the only garage door insulation product on the market with dual-season, door assembly R-values calculated by a qualified thermal engineer — not adapted wall or ceiling values. For Sydney homeowners, that means real, measurable performance you can verify before you buy.

Verified R-Values You Can Trust

Thermal Bridging Through Steel Garage Door Hardware — FLIR Thermal Image

Surface temperature readings: 37.6°C at the steel hinge (thermal bridge) / 32.6°C at the ThermaDoor panel

What you are seeing: The blue areas show ThermaDoor panels doing their job — blocking radiant heat. The red and orange areas are the steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. It is why material R-values alone do not tell the full story — and why ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated on the complete installed door assembly, steel and all – providing you honest R-values you can rely on.

Calculated on the Complete Installed Door – Not Just the Insulation Material

You have probably noticed that on your garage door, the metal frame, hinges, and joins get burning hot in summer. That heat travels through the steel and straight into your garage — this is called thermal bridging. It is why the R-value of the insulation panel alone does not tell you how well your garage door actually performs.

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values for building compliance must be calculated as system (assembly) values — not just the material value. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation kit in Australia with independently calculated, dual-season door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

ThermaDoor provides honest R-values — independently verified, calculated on the complete installed door, and published for anyone to review.

These values are calculated by a qualified thermal engineer to AS/NZS 4859.1 and AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. Standard uninsulated steel garage doors perform at approximately R0.0, providing virtually no thermal resistance.

Why ‘Purpose-Made’ Means Nothing Without Test Data

Some garage door insulation products on the Australian market claim to be “purpose-made” — but purpose-made for what, exactly? PIR foam (polyisocyanurate) is a construction material used in cool rooms, roofing, and wall panels. Cutting it to size and fitting it into a garage door does not make it purpose-made for a garage door. It makes it repurposed.

A genuinely purpose-made product has test data to prove it. If a product is engineered specifically for a garage door — accounting for the steel frame, hinges, thermal bridging, and real-world installation — it will have an independent assembly R-value report to show for it.

When evaluating any garage door insulation product, ask one question: “Can you show me the independent engineering report for the complete installed door assembly?” If the answer is no — or if the only data available is the material R-value of the foam panel alone — you are not looking at a verified product.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

Frequently Asked Questions — Garage Door Insulation Sydney

Does garage door insulation work in Sydney's summer heat?

Yes — and Sydney’s climate makes it one of the most effective upgrades you can make. Surface temperatures on a north or west-facing metal garage door regularly exceed 60°C in Sydney summers. ThermaDoor’s independently tested assembly R-value of R1.43 means the complete installed door — steel frame, hinges, and all — resists heat transfer significantly better than an uninsulated door. The result is a garage that stays measurably cooler on extreme heat days, and rooms adjoining the garage that are easier and cheaper to air condition.

The best garage door insulation for Sydney is a system independently tested as a complete installed door assembly — not just the foam panel in isolation. Sydney’s combination of intense summer heat, humidity, and cool winter nights requires a product that performs across both seasons. ThermaDoor is independently tested to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 with declared assembly R-values of R1.43 (winter) and R1.39 (summer) — the only product on the Australian market with dual-season, door assembly R-values verified by a qualified thermal engineer. Before buying any garage door insulation, ask the supplier for their independent engineering report for the complete installed door. If they cannot provide one, the R-value they are quoting is not verified.

ThermaDoor DIY kits start from $290 for a single door and $580 for a double door, with freight calculated at checkout based on your Sydney postcode. ThermaDoor is designed specifically for sectional garage doors and tilt garage doors — the two most common types in Australian homes. It is not suitable for roller doors. If you are unsure which type of door you have, contact us and we can help you identify the right solution.

An R-value measures how well an insulation product resists heat flow — the higher the R-value, the better the performance. However, many products only quote the R-value of the raw insulation material, which is misleading. To know how a product will actually perform in your home, you need the assembly R-value — calculated on the complete installed door including the steel frame and hinges. ThermaDoor is independently tested as a complete installed system, achieving a verified assembly rating of R1.43 (winter) and R1.39 (summer). Always ask for the engineering report before buying any garage door insulation product.
