Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values used for building compliance must be calculated as system (assembly) values — not just the material value.

Most garage door insulation products only quote R-values based on walls, floors, or ceilings or material values. These numbers do not reflect how the product actually performs once installed in a moving, metal garage door.

The blue panels are ThermaDoor — the insulation doing its job. The red and orange areas are steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. Australian Standards are clear. Material R-values tell you how a foam board performs on a bench. They tell you nothing about how it performs inside a moving, unsealed metal garage door. Read why rigid boards are not purpose-built for garage doors.
