Home / Garage Door Insulation for Toowoomba & Darling Downs

Purpose-Built. Independently Tested. Since 2012.

In Toowoomba, winter mornings can drop to near zero. An attached garage with no insulation acts as a cold box pressed against your living areas — pushing cold air into adjoining rooms, driving up your heating bills, and making the garage itself unusable for months of the year.

In summer, the reverse is true. A western or northern facing garage can reach extreme temperatures by mid-afternoon, and without insulation that heat transfers directly into your home.

From Toowoomba and Highfields across to Dalby, Warwick, and Stanthorpe, these temperature extremes affect homes across the entire Darling Downs. ThermaDoor garage door insulation is purpose-built for Australian conditions. Our premium EPS panels are engineered specifically for sectional and tilt doors to block up to 90% of radiant heat, reduce street noise, and instantly upgrade your garage with a durable, wipe-clean vinyl finish.
Proudly Australian owned and manufactured, we offer two simple ways to get ThermaDoor in Toowoomba: order a DIY kit delivered directly to your door or supply and installation through our local Toowoomba distributor.

Locally Based. Australian Made.

ThermaDoor is headquartered on the Sunshine Coast, with our factory at Chevallum. When you buy ThermaDoor for Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, you’re buying Australian made insulation from a local business that knows the Queensland climate firsthand.

Built for Toowoomba's Climate

Cold Winters & Frost

Toowoomba winters are genuinely cold. Temperatures regularly drop near zero overnight and frosts are common across the Downs. An uninsulated garage pushes cold air directly into adjoining rooms, driving up heating bills and making the space unusable. ThermaDoor's EPS core slows heat loss overnight, keeping the cold where it belongs — outside.

Storm Season Protection

The Darling Downs sees intense summer storms with heavy rain, hail, and wind. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and impact resistant — unlike open-cell foam, polyester batts, or fibreglass insulation that absorb moisture and fail in wet conditions. Built for Australian weather.

Hot Summer Afternoons

Toowoomba summers bring strong afternoon heat. A western or northern facing garage can reach extreme temperatures by mid-afternoon, pushing heat into your living spaces and driving up cooling costs. ThermaDoor blocks up to 90% of radiant heat to keep your home comfortable year-round.

A Real Home. A Real Result.

Deborah’s home is on the Sunshine Coast — the same Queensland climate, the same afternoon sun, the same uninsulated steel door problem that homeowners across Australia know well.

For Deborah’s son, an NDIS participant, the garage is “The Cave” — a vital space for his independence and his support team. They had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering to create something special. But the heat made it almost unusable.

The FLIR images below were taken on a completely ordinary autumn afternoon — outside temperature just 28°C. The uninsulated steel door was already radiating 44.7°C into the space. That is not a heatwave. That is a standard garage door making a mild day unbearable.

The temperature in the space has dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home.

“ThermaDoor’s garage door insulation is the best. I have tried others and they don’t even come close. ThermaDoor is easy to install and the panel looks great. It looks very professional and not like an afterthought. I cannot recommend this product enough. You will not be disappointed if you choose to go with ThermaDoor insulation.”

Before and after surface temperature readings of a garage door with and without ThermaDoor insulation
Before: 61°C surface temp. After ThermaDoor: 31°C. Disclaimer: Temperatures may vary depending on orientation and location of garage.

Verified R-Values You Can Trust

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values used for building compliance must be calculated as system (assembly) values — not just the material value.

Most garage door insulation products only quote R-values based on walls, floors, or ceilings or material values.  These numbers do not reflect how the product actually performs once installed in a moving, metal garage door.

ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation kit in Australia with independently calculated, dual-season door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

These values are calculated by a qualified thermal engineer to AS/NZS 4859.1 and AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 for the complete installed door assembly — not just the insulation panel on its own.

What "Complete Door Assembly" Actually Means

The blue panels are ThermaDoor — the insulation doing its job. The red and orange areas are steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. Some products claim their installed R-value is higher than their material R-value. Steel conducts heat — that is not how garage door insulation works. ThermaDoor’s R1.43 is tested on a complete installed door, steel and all. Read more about thermal bridging and garage doors.

Three Layers. Engineered as One

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

Durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the panel from Australia's harsh climate. It resists fading, cracking, and weathering — delivering a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Bonded to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat, acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier, and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification. It's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes — completing the three-layer system.

Step 1: What brand is your garage door?

Your door brand determines the panel thickness required.

What is your panel thickness?

How do I measure my panel thickness?
How to measure panel thickness: Open your garage door and look at the edge of one of the door panels from the side. Use a tape measure or ruler to measure the thickness of the panel from the front face to the back face. This is your panel thickness. Most Steel-Line doors are either 30mm or 35mm.

Step 2: How many panels does your door have?

Count the individual panel sections across the full width of your door.

This door requires 2 kits. When you reach the shop, make sure you fill in both kit dropdowns with the correct size before adding to cart.

Step 3: Measure your panels

Measure every panel, then enter the largest measurement below.

⚠ Measure every panel before entering anything

Panels on the same door are often different sizes. If you only measure one panel and it turns out not to be the largest, your kit will be too small. Measure all panels first, then enter the longest length and largest height below.

Independent NatHERS Modelling  |  Toowoomba Climate Zone 50  |  ThermaDoor Installed

Struggling to Hit 7 Stars? Your Garage Door Might Be the Answer

How Garage Door Insulation Helps Toowoomba New Builds Meet NCC 2022

If you are building a new home in Toowoomba or the Darling Downs, you already know about the 7-star NatHERS energy efficiency requirements under NCC 2022. Hitting that target in Climate Zone 50 can be difficult and expensive — upgraded glazing, extra roof insulation, costly design changes.

Many homeowners and their builders overlook the largest moving part of the house: the garage door.

Independent energy modelling on a standard slab-on-ground home in Toowoomba (Climate Zone 50) showed that insulating an unconditioned garage with ThermaDoor garage door insulation helped achieve a NatHERS improvement from 5.4 stars to 5.8 stars — especially valuable when margins are tight and you need every fraction of a star. If your garage is air-conditioned, the improvement jumps to +1.0 stars, taking a 4.9-star home to 5.9 stars.

To count in your NatHERS assessment, your energy assessor needs a verified assembly R-value — not a material R-value or an unverified claim. ThermaDoor provides an independently verified R1.43 winter assembly R-value, calculated to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 by a registered professional engineer. That is the exact number your assessor inputs into their NatHERS software.

Your next steps are simple:

1. Tell your builder you want ThermaDoor specified in your new build.

2. Send your energy assessor the link below -- it has the verified R-value report and full NatHERS compliance data they need.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Still Shopping Around for Garage Door Insulation? Start Here.

Before you buy, do one simple thing: check whether the supplier quotes the same R-value on every page of their own website.

Australian Standards are clear. Material R-values tell you how a foam board performs on a bench. They tell you nothing about how it performs inside a moving, unsealed metal garage door. Read why rigid boards are not purpose-built for garage doors.

The only R-value that counts is the installed assembly value. Some suppliers in this market quote R1.75 material and R2.0 installed on one page, then R1.5 material and “up to R1.75 installed” on another. These are not rounding differences. They are completely different claims about the same product, on the same website, with no independent testing to support either version.

Every consumer has the right to make an informed decision based on accurate product information. If a supplier cannot produce an independent engineering report for the complete installed door assembly tested to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018, their installed R-value is not a measurement. It is a guess.

This checklist gives you the five questions to ask before you spend a dollar.

  • Door-specific R-value checks (AS/NZS 4859.1 and 4859.2)
  • Mechanical fixing vs glue — why it matters
  • Door weight and spring safety (AS/NZS 4505)
  • Air gap and cavity design prompts
  • NCC 2022 / NatHERS documentation prompts

Frequently Asked Questions - Garage Door Insulation Toowoomba and the Darling Downs

Does garage door insulation work in Toowoomba's climate?

Yes — and Toowoomba’s climate is one of the strongest arguments for it. Toowoomba experiences cold winters with regular frost, hot summer afternoons, and significant temperature swings between seasons. An uninsulated garage door is one of the largest sources of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. ThermaDoor’s R1.43 winter assembly R-value significantly reduces that transfer, keeping your garage and attached living areas more comfortable year-round.

Yes. Independent NatHERS modelling for Toowoomba (Climate Zone 50) showed that adding ThermaDoor to an unconditioned garage improved the home’s energy rating from 5.4 to 5.8 stars — a +0.4 star gain from a single low-cost upgrade. For air-conditioned garages, the improvement was +1.0 stars. If your build is close to the 7-star target, garage door insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to close the gap.

Yes. ThermaDoor is available in Toowoomba two ways. You can order a DIY kit online and it ships direct to your door anywhere in the Darling Downs — no installer required. Alternatively, our authorised local distributor, Darling Downs Garage Doors & Gates, can supply and install ThermaDoor for you in Toowoomba and surrounding areas.

Most homeowners complete a standard double garage door in two to four hours. The kit includes everything you need — no special tools, no trades, no drilling. Full instructions are included, and our team is available by phone if you need guidance.

ThermaDoor is purpose-built to fit the most common Australian garage door brands, including B&D, Gliderol, Centurion, and Steel-Line. Panel thickness varies by brand, so use our online calculator to confirm the correct kit for your door before ordering.

ThermaDoor has a verified winter assembly R-value of R1.43, tested and certified to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018 by registered professional engineer James Fricker. This is an independently verified assembly R-value — not a material R-value or a manufacturer’s estimate — which means it is the number your NatHERS energy assessor can use directly in their software.

Yes. ThermaDoor kits are backed by a manufacturer’s warranty. Contact the ThermaDoor team for full warranty terms and conditions.

DIY kits ship to any address across the Darling Downs — including Dalby, Warwick, Stanthorpe, Oakey, Pittsworth, Clifton, and Goondiwindi. For professional supply and installation outside Toowoomba city, contact our local distributor to confirm coverage in your area.
