Purpose-Built. Independently Tested. Since 2012.

Tasmania throws everything at you. Hobart summers can push garage temperatures well past 40°C, then a cold front rolls in from the Southern Ocean and drops it overnight. In winter, Antarctic air funnels straight up through the Derwent Valley and a poorly sealed garage door lets it straight into your home. Whether you are in Hobart’s inner suburbs, the Eastern Shore, the Huon Valley, or regional Tasmania, the temperature inside your garage has a direct impact on your home’s comfort, energy bills and how much of that space you can actually use. If you have been searching Hobart or Tasmania for garage door insulation that genuinely works, ThermaDoor delivers tested, purpose-built results.

ThermaDoor is Australia’s original, purpose-built garage door insulation. Designed specifically for sectional and tilt doors, our premium EPS panels block radiant heat, reduce street noise, and instantly upgrade the look of your garage with a durable, wipe-clean vinyl finish.

Proudly Australian owned and manufactured, we offer two simple ways to insulate your garage: order a DIY kit delivered anywhere in Hobart and Tasmania or connect with an authorised ThermaDoor installer in your area.

Australian Made. Australian Owned.

ThermaDoor is designed and manufactured in Queensland, with our factory at Chevallum on the Sunshine Coast. When you order ThermaDoor for Hobart or anywhere in Tasmania, you are buying Australian made insulation from a business that has engineered its product specifically for the Australian climate.

Built for Hobart & Tasmania's Climate

Cold Winters & Frosty Mornings

Tasmania's winters are the harshest in mainland-adjacent Australia. Launceston regularly drops below 0°C overnight, and an uninsulated garage door bleeds warmth straight out of your home. ThermaDoor's EPS core and foil backing work together to slow heat loss and keep your garage usable through the coldest months, whether your door faces south, east, or straight into the morning frost.

Year-Round Moisture & Damp Conditions

Tasmania's high rainfall and humidity put pressure on garage environments in a way most mainland states never experience. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and impact resistant, unlike open-cell foam, polyester batts, or fibreglass insulation that absorb moisture and deteriorate over time. Built to handle whatever Tasmania throws at it, year after year.

Warm Summers, Freezing Nights

Tasmania's summers can surprise you with warm, dry days — but temperatures plummet once the sun goes down. An uninsulated garage swings between extremes, putting stress on stored gear, vehicles, and anything temperature-sensitive. ThermaDoor stabilises the environment inside your garage, so your tools, equipment, and stored items stay protected from extreme fluctuations year-round.

A Real Home. A Real Result.

For Deborah’s son, an NDIS participant, the garage is “The Cave” — a vital space for his independence and his support team. They had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering to create something special. But the heat made it almost unusable.

The FLIR images below were taken on a completely ordinary autumn afternoon — outside temperature just 28°C, sunny, 15 km/h NE wind. The uninsulated steel door was already radiating 44.7°C into the space. That is not a heatwave. That is a standard garage door making a mild day unbearable. Hobart summers regularly reach 35–38°C — and in winter, the same uninsulated door works in reverse, pulling warmth straight out of your home.

“The temperature in the space has dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home.”

Verified R-Values You Can Trust

Thermal Bridging Through Steel Garage Door Hardware — FLIR Thermal Image

Surface temperature readings: 37.6°C at the steel hinge (thermal bridge) / 32.6°C at the ThermaDoor panel

What you are seeing: The blue areas show ThermaDoor panels doing their job — blocking radiant heat. The red and orange areas are the steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. It is why material R-values alone do not tell the full story — and why ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated on the complete installed door assembly, steel and all.

Calculated on the Complete Installed Door – Not Just the Insulation Material

You have probably noticed that on your garage door, the metal frame, hinges, and joins get burning hot in summer. That heat travels through the steel and straight into your garage — this is called thermal bridging. It is why the R-value of the insulation panel alone does not tell you how well your garage door actually performs.

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values for building compliance must be calculated as system (assembly) values — not just the material value. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation kit in Australia with independently calculated, dual-season door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

ThermaDoor provides honest R-values — independently verified, calculated on the complete installed door, and published for anyone to review.

These values are calculated by a qualified thermal engineer to AS/NZS 4859.1 and AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. Standard uninsulated steel garage doors perform at approximately R0.0, providing virtually no thermal resistance.

When evaluating any garage door insulation product, always ask for the independent engineering report. If a supplier cannot provide one, the R-value they are quoting is not verified.

In Hobart and Tasmania, the difference between a material R-value and a tested door assembly R-value is the difference between a product that looks good on paper and one that actually keeps your garage cooler. ThermaDoor’s R1.43 is tested on a complete installed door — steel, hinges, and all.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

Three Layers. Engineered as One

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

Durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the panel from Australia's harsh climate. It resists fading, cracking, and weathering — delivering a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Bonded to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat, acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier, and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification. It's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes — completing the three-layer system.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Still Shopping Around for Garage Door Insulation? Start Here.

Before you buy, do one simple thing: check whether the supplier quotes the same R-value on every page of their own website.

Australian Standards are clear. The only R-value that counts is the installed assembly value. Material R-values tell you how a foam board performs on a bench. They tell you nothing about how it performs inside a moving, unsealed metal garage door.

Some suppliers in this market quote R1.75 material and R2.0 installed on one page, then R1.5 material and “up to R1.75 installed” on another. These are not rounding differences. They are completely different claims about the same product, on the same website, with no independent testing to support either version.

Every consumer has the right to make an informed decision based on accurate product information. If a supplier cannot produce an independent engineering report for the complete installed door assembly tested to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018, their installed R-value is not a measurement. It is a guess.

This checklist gives you the five questions to ask before you spend a dollar.

Mechanical fixing vs glue — why it matters
Door weight and spring safety (AS/NZS 4505)

Frequently Asked Questions - Garage Door Insulation Hobart & Tasmania

Does ThermaDoor deliver to Tasmania?

Yes — ThermaDoor DIY kits ship directly to any address in Tasmania, including Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, Burnie, and regional areas. Freight is calculated at checkout based on your postcode.

Absolutely. Tasmania has some of the most extreme temperature swings in Australia — hot, dry summers and genuinely cold winters with Antarctic air pushing up from the south. An uninsulated garage door acts like a giant heat sink in summer and a cold radiator in winter. ThermaDoor’s EPS panels significantly reduce that thermal transfer, making your garage more comfortable and reducing the load on any heating or cooling in adjacent rooms.

Yes. The ThermaDoor DIY kit is designed to be installed by a homeowner with basic tools in a few hours. No trades are required. Full instructions are included, and our support team is available if you need guidance during installation.

ThermaDoor is supplied and installed by authorised distributors across Tasmania. In Hobart, Independent Roller Doors and On The Mark Garage Doors are our certified installers. Contact them directly or use our contact form and we will connect you with the right installer for your area.

Yes. ThermaDoor is purpose-designed for both sectional (panel-lift) garage doors and tilt doors, which are common in older Tasmanian homes. If you are unsure which door type you have, contact us and we can help you identify the right kit.

ThermaDoor’s laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and does not absorb moisture — unlike polyester batts or open-cell foam products that can deteriorate in Tasmania’s high-rainfall, high-humidity conditions. The panels will not sag, rot, or harbour mould over time.

DIY kit pricing starts from $290 for a single door (8 panels) and $580 for a double door (16 panels), not including freight. Freight to Tasmania is calculated at checkout. For a professional installation quote, contact your nearest authorised installer.

Yes — particularly in homes where the garage is attached or shares a wall with a living area, which is very common in Hobart and Launceston. Customers consistently report that insulating the garage door reduces the temperature bleed into adjacent rooms, lowers heating and cooling costs, and makes the garage itself usable year-round rather than just in mild weather.
