Home / Garage Door Insulation Melbourne & Victoria – DIY & Pro Install

Purpose-Built. Independently Tested. Since 2012.

Melbourne throws everything at you. Scorching northerlies in summer push garage temperatures well past 50°C, then a cool change rolls in and drops it 20 degrees overnight. In winter, the cold comes up from the south and a poorly insulated garage door acts as a massive thermal bridge, pulling heat straight out of your home.  Whether you are in the inner suburbs, the outer east, the Mornington Peninsula or regional Victoria, the temperature inside your garage has a direct impact on your home’s comfort, energy bills and how much of that space you can actually use. If you have been searching Melbourne or Victoria for garage door insulation that genuinely works, ThermaDoor delivers tested, purpose-built results.

ThermaDoor is Australia’s original, purpose-built garage door insulation. Designed specifically for sectional and tilt doors, our premium EPS panels block radiant heat, reduce street noise, and instantly upgrade the look of your garage with a durable, wipe-clean vinyl finish.

Proudly Australian owned and manufactured, we offer two simple ways to insulate your garage: order a DIY kit delivered anywhere in Melbourne or Victoria or connect with an authorised ThermaDoor distributors in your area.

Australian Made. Australian Owned.

ThermaDoor is designed and manufactured in Queensland, with our factory at Chevallum on the Sunshine Coast. When you order ThermaDoor in Melbourne or anywhere in Victoria, you are buying Australian made insulation from a business that has engineered its product specifically for the Australian climate.

Built for Melbourne & Victoria's Climate

Summer Heat & Northerly Winds

Melbourne's summers are unpredictable but the heat is real. Northerly winds push garage temperatures well past 50°C in an uninsulated space, and west-facing doors cop it hardest. ThermaDoor's EPS core and reflective foil backing work together to block radiant heat and keep the garage usable, whether your door faces north, west, or straight into the afternoon sun.

Four Seasons in One Day

Victoria's weather swings are hard on uninsulated spaces. Summer heat, autumn rain, cold snaps and everything in between puts pressure on your garage environment year-round. ThermaDoor's laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and impact resistant, unlike open-cell foam, polyester batts, or fibreglass insulation that absorb moisture and deteriorate over time. Built to handle whatever Victoria throws at it.

Cold Winter Mornings

Melbourne winters are genuinely cold, with overnight temperatures regularly dropping to single digits. ThermaDoor slows heat loss overnight, so stepping into your garage on a winter morning is not the shock to the system it used to be — and your stored gear, tools, and vehicles stay protected from the cold year-round.

Meeting Victoria's 7-Star Energy Standards

Victoria's NCC 7-star energy requirements have applied to all new homes and major renovations since May 2024. An uninsulated garage door performs at approximately R0.0 — one of the biggest thermal liabilities in any home. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation in Australia with independently calculated assembly R-values to AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. When your builder or energy assessor asks about garage door insulation, ask for ThermaDoor by name.

What Melbourne Customers Are Saying About ThermaDoor

“I took the time to do my research and was able to find ThermaDoor. I can honestly say it was the only product on the market that I felt was actually going to perform to the highest possible standard. It felt like a consultation based on data and not a sales pitch — but it was very interesting to hear about some of the traps of cheap products who actually will have a significantly inferior performance.”

— Matthew Taylor, Melbourne ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Google Review

Matthew converted his garage into a home gym and spent time researching every insulation option on the market before choosing ThermaDoor. Melbourne’s summer northerlies push uninsulated garage temperatures well past 50°C — a home gym becomes unusable without proper insulation. ThermaDoor’s three-layer panel system delivers independently tested R-values that cheap foam alternatives cannot match.

A Real Home. A Real Result.

For Deborah’s son, an NDIS participant, the garage is “The Cave” — a vital space for his independence and his support team. They had already invested in an epoxy floor and replastering to create something special. But the heat made it almost unusable.

The FLIR images below were taken on a completely ordinary autumn afternoon — outside temperature just 28°C, sunny, 15 km/h NE wind. The uninsulated steel door was already radiating 44.7°C into the space. That is not a heatwave. That is a standard garage door making a mild day unbearable. Melbourne summers regularly exceed 40°C — the same door here would be significantly worse.

“The temperature in the space has dropped by at least 20 degrees, which has completely transformed how we can use it. Since installing ThermaDoor, it has become a comfortable, functional, and genuinely enjoyable environment. It has opened up a whole new level of independence and capacity building for my son and his team. This has been one of the most impactful upgrades we’ve made to our home.”

Verified R-Values You Can Trust

Thermal Bridging Through Steel Garage Door Hardware — FLIR Thermal Image

Surface temperature readings: 37.6°C at the steel hinge (thermal bridge) / 32.6°C at the ThermaDoor panel

What you are seeing: The blue areas show ThermaDoor panels doing their job — blocking radiant heat. The red and orange areas are the steel hinges and panel joins conducting heat straight through the door. This is thermal bridging, and it happens in every sectional garage door. It is why material R-values alone do not tell the full story — and why ThermaDoor’s R-values are calculated on the complete installed door assembly, steel and all.

Calculated on the Complete Installed Door – Not Just the Insulation Material

You have probably noticed that on your garage door, the metal frame, hinges, and joins get burning hot in summer. That heat travels through the steel and straight into your garage — this is called thermal bridging. It is why the R-value of the insulation panel alone does not tell you how well your garage door actually performs.

Under Australian Standards, insulation R-values for building compliance must be calculated as system (assembly) values — not just the material value. ThermaDoor is the only garage door insulation kit in Australia with independently calculated, dual-season door assembly R-values:

R1.43 (winter) / R1.39 (summer)

ThermaDoor provides honest R-values — independently verified, calculated on the complete installed door, and published for anyone to review.

These values are calculated by a qualified thermal engineer to AS/NZS 4859.1 and AS/NZS 4859.2:2018. Standard uninsulated steel garage doors perform at approximately R0.0, providing virtually no thermal resistance.

When evaluating any garage door insulation product, always ask for the independent engineering report. If a supplier cannot provide one, the R-value they are quoting is not verified.

In Melbourne and Victoria, the difference between a material R-value and a tested door assembly R-value is the difference between a product that looks good on paper and one that actually keeps your garage cooler. ThermaDoor’s R1.43 is tested on a complete installed door — steel, hinges, and all.

Our article on thermal bridging and garage doors explains why tested assembly values matter.

Three Layers. Engineered as One

High-Density EPS Core

Flame retardant, construction-grade expanded polystyrene foam is the primary insulator in every ThermaDoor panel. It slows conducted heat transfer through the door — keeping your garage significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter, year after year.

UV-Stable Vinyl Facing

Durable, flame retardant, UV-resistant vinyl facing protects the panel from Australia's harsh climate. It resists fading, cracking, and weathering — delivering a clean, professional finish that holds its appearance and structural integrity for the life of the door.

Sisalation Foil Backing

Bonded to the back of every panel, this construction-grade foil reflects radiant heat, acts as a Class 2 vapour barrier, and achieves Group 1 fire performance classification. It's the same foil used to wrap Australian homes — completing the three-layer system.

Frequently Asked Questions - Garage Door Insulation Melbourne & Victoria

Does garage door insulation work in Melbourne's climate?

Yes — and Melbourne’s climate is one of the strongest arguments for it. Summer northerlies push uninsulated garage temperatures past 50°C, while winter overnight lows regularly drop to single digits. ThermaDoor’s EPS core and reflective foil backing work in both directions, blocking radiant heat in summer and slowing heat loss in winter. The result is a garage that stays 10 to 15 degrees closer to ambient temperature year-round, which makes a measurable difference to both comfort and energy bills in a home with an attached garage.

Professional installation in Victoria is available through ThermaDoor’s authorised distributor network. Distributors are located in Shepparton, Pakenham, Geelong and Mildura. Contact us and we will connect you with your nearest authorised ThermaDoor installer. If you are in Melbourne metro or an area not covered by a local distributor, our DIY kit ships direct to your door and can be installed in a few hours without trades.

ThermaDoor DIY kits start from $290 for a standard single door (8 panels) and $580 for a double door (16 panels), delivered anywhere in Victoria. Professional installation pricing varies by distributor and door size — contact your nearest authorised ThermaDoor installer for a quote. Compared to the cost of running air conditioning to compensate for an uninsulated garage, most Melbourne homeowners recover the cost within the first summer.

Yes. ThermaDoor’s laminated vinyl finish is water resistant and impact resistant, which means it handles rain, humidity and temperature swings without absorbing moisture or deteriorating. Unlike fibreglass batts or open-cell foam products that can sag or absorb moisture over time, ThermaDoor panels are purpose-built to maintain performance through the full range of Victorian weather conditions.

Yes — ThermaDoor DIY kits ship to any Victorian postcode, including Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton, Wodonga, Warrnambool, Mildura, the Mornington Peninsula, Latrobe Valley and all regional areas. Orders are dispatched from our Queensland factory and delivered via standard freight. Most Victorian deliveries arrive within 3 to 5 business days.

ThermaDoor is designed specifically for sectional panel doors and tilt doors, which are the most common garage door types in Victorian homes. It is not suitable for roller doors. If you are unsure whether your door is compatible, check our door compatibility guide or contact us before ordering — we would rather help you confirm fit than have you order the wrong product.

The simplest way to insulate your Melbourne garage is with a ThermaDoor DIY kit, delivered directly to your door. Each kit comes with purpose-built EPS panels sized for your door, a reflective foil backing, and everything you need to complete the job yourself in a few hours — no trades, no adhesives, no special tools. If you prefer to have it done for you, contact us and we will connect you with an authorised ThermaDoor distributor in your area.

Yes. Since May 2024, all new homes and major renovations in Victoria must achieve a 7-star NatHERS energy rating. An uninsulated garage door is a thermal bridge that leaks heat in winter and absorbs it in summer, dragging down your home’s overall efficiency. By installing ThermaDoor, you add a verified assembly R-value of R1.43 (winter) to the largest opening in your home, significantly improving its thermal envelope and helping you align with the new 7-star standards.
